If you haven't heard our honeymoon story then you're in for a treat. I try to laugh about it now, but it's still a touchy subject. I'm ONLY writing this because we have finally booked honeymoon 2.0.
First off, my dream honeymoon has ALWAYS been Greece. Before COVID-19 became popular we decided to not go to Greece because we were unsure what was going to happen with things on over there in surrounding countries. So, we decided on the next best option that kept us in the U.S. - Hawaii. I was SO excited for Hawaii. Our trip was planned to a T. Thanks to COVID-19 we had to cancel Hawaii. Our trip was planned right around the time that Hawaii halted travels.
I was so upset and had absolutely no idea where we were going to go for our honeymoon. I was trying to find some places in the U.S., but mostly everywhere I was looking was on fire :( 2020 was such a sad time for our country. Andrew ended up finding us a GREAT deal to Turks and Caicos. It took me a little while to get excited for T&C because I was so ready for Hawaii, but I eventually came around.
If you didn't know, you have to have negative COVID -19 test results to enter into other countries and guess what ... we had negative test BUT THE WRONG ONES. As were sitting in the plane at the Miami Airport I get a call from T&C that we need to get off the plane because we have the wrong tests. Needless to say, I lost it in the airport. We were stranded. There weren't any flights back to Atlanta and Miami has never been a place I wanted to visit. After spending HOURS in the airport waiting on our luggage & trying to decide what to do we end up renting a car.
Leaving ATL || Not so patiently waiting for our luggage || Finally in the rental car
We headed for Key West! We had already had the most mentally draining day by like 11:30am so we were just praying that we would make it to Key West & have a good time.
The drive to Key West from Miami is beautiful!! I tried to drive some of it so Andrew could rest but I HATE driving over water! Anyone else? It makes me SO nervous! We finally made it to our resort & I literally had NOTHING planned for us, but at least the view from our room was gorgeous and the resort was very nice!
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed at the Casa Marina Key West, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. It's one of the only beachfront resorts in Key West. Key West is definitely not known for their beaches but for the gorgeous blue waters. The Casa Marina is a sister resort to The Reach Key West. Breakfast at The Reach is a MUST. It's SO good!
What To Do
Like I mentioned earlier, I didn't really get to plan for this trip so everything was kind of on a whim.
100% rent bikes. The island is so small that you can pretty much bike anywhere. We loved riding the bikes to dinner but I didn't enjoy biking back to the resort after a big dinner haha.
I think my favorite part was snorkeling at the reef. Our guides were so much & we saw SO many sea turtles. I am TERRIFIED of the ocean, but I actually had so much fun. Even swam with a reef shark! We used Barefoot Billy's for the excursion and they're located at the Casa Marina. We also did the jet ski tour with them! The guides for that were also a lot of fun!
Check out Duval Street. Stop anywhere along the way for food, drink and plenty of people-watching.
We didn't do this, but I think it would be fun if you have kids - The Conch Train! We saw it pass by multiple times!
The southernmost point of the contiguous U.S. in Key West. This was pretty cool for us since I had seen photos of this famous spot so it was cool to be there in person!
We had to leave a few days early due to weather so we ended our trip with a sunset wine cruise. It was beautiful watching the sunset on the water! I don't do well in the ocean so I was drinking ginger-ale LOL but Andrew enjoyed all the wines. Plus, the hors d'oeuvres were soooo good!!
What To Eat
We enjoyed breakfast at The Reach. So good. 100% worth the bike ride or walk over to it from the Casa Marina. When we were in a hurry for breakfast we would stop by the little café at the Casa Marina and grab something quick.
A good lunch spot is the Seaside Café Ocean Bar. BEST. PIZZA. EVER. Plus, it's right on the water. You just have to ignore the roosters everywhere.
If you want a fancier dinner with a view then head to Hot Tin Roof. You have to get some of their key lime pie!
If you're wanting a more laid back dinner place, then head to Conch Republic Seafood & Company. This was Andrew's favorite spot. He had the lobster tail and it was huge lol.
Wherever you go eat, make sure to grab a mojito. Key West is known for their mojitos and key lime pie.
Remember, I packed for Turks & Caicos which is a bit of a different atmosphere than Key West. Here are some things I had packed that I found useful & some things I wish I had.
